Just to confirm that there will be a club ride this Sunday (6th March). I am just working on the details at the moment, but hope to post more information later today.

Following on from my previous message:
The club ride for March will be on the 6th at 9.30am starting and finishing from the Village Hotel (at some point for future club rides this may get switched back to War Memorial Park but I will first need confirmation that the cafe is open again!).

Following the ride the intention is to have a tea break in the cafe.

A few things:
  • I am still devising routes for this months club ride. It is intended that one will be about 25 miles (max) and the other will be about 32 miles. I would really appreciate it if anyone has routes which they can suggest as it will allow us to build a library of club routes.
  • Given the time of year, the 32 mile route will be paced at about 16 mph and the 25 mile route will be at the pace of the slowest rider. The routes should last around 2 hours. If you wish to do the 16mph route, please make sure you are capable of maintaining the advertised speed.
  • If anyone would be interested in leading one of the club rides please contact me to discuss, as we are often short on people to lead the rides.
  • Any constructive feedback anyone can give about the club rides would be appreciated. What do you like or dislike about the rides? Any comments about routes, length, speeds, group size, number of routes on the day, etiquette....

Kind regards,
Matt

The proposed routes for this weekend's club rides (6th March @ 9.30am, Village Hotel) are as follow.

Short loop 24.7 miles
http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=212085

Long loop 32.9 miles
http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=212076

Due to time, these routes are untested, but I believe they should be suitable. Please let me know any comments.

It's still early days yet, but currently the forecast for Sunday morning is for frost.  So just a reminder that, as always, the ride will be subject to appropriate weather conditions.

Hi everyone,

As promised, here are more details regarding the next club ride.
Date/Time: 3rd April, 9.30am
Duration: 2 hours (approx)
Start/Finish Venue: Village Hotel

This month we are intending to run three loops to provide more options for those participating. The proposed routes are as follows:

There will be a short loop of about 25 miles, http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=215624. This will be paced at the speed of the slowest and will be led by Fiona Fisher.

The second loop will be a medium length of about 31 miles, http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=215622. This will be paced at 14 - 15 mph average and will be led by Pete Dickinson and Amanda Window.

The third loop is the longest at about 35 miles, http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=215625. This will be paced at 16 - 17 mph average and will be led by myself.

Please ensure that you stick and work together as a group, for whichever group you are with.

Following the ride we will meet back at the cafe for a cup of tea and cake.

Hope to see you all there.

Kind regards,
Matt

Dear everyone,

We have a different Start/Finish venue for this months ride.
-Start Finish location: Esquires Coffee House by the Transport Museum. http://www.esquirescoffee.co.uk/public/stores/29
-Date/time: Sunday 1st May, 9.30am
-I'm informed that if you require parking it is available on Cox St. near to the sports centre, or Bishop St. by the old sorting office for £1 on Sundays.
-Due to the city centre location you are also strongly advised to bring a lock with you.
-If you have club kit, please try to remember to wear if possible.
-The code of conduct for club rides can be found in the gallery and I urge everyone to have a look: http://www.covtri.co.uk/index.php?action=mgallery;sa=media;id=311;dl

Please note the following:
If you want to do the club ride, but are uncertain as to which route you should do, then please do not hesitate to contact me or one of the other coaches. If you haven't done a club ride before then please pick the slowest route and see how you get on. If in doubt go for the shorter, slower route so that you and everyone else enjoys the ride!

Subject to me identifying enough ride leaders, I have planned three provisional routes:

26.8 miles (This will be run at the pace of the slowest rider)
http://www.bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=236724

30.6 miles (This will be 14 - 15 mph average - you must be able to sustain this average speed for about two hours.)
http://www.bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=236713

36.1 miles (This will be at 16 - 17 mph average - you must be able to susatain this average speed for about two hours.)
http://www.bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=230456

Looking forward to seeing as many of you there as possible.

Kind regards,
Matt

The next club ride is this Sunday, 5th June, 9.30am

-Start Finish location: Esquires Coffee House, by the Transport Museum.
http://www.esquirescoffee.co.uk/public/stores/29
-I'm informed that if you require parking it is available on Cox St.
near to the sports centre, or Bishop St. by the old sorting office for
£1 on Sundays.
-Due to the city centre location you are also strongly advised to bring
a lock with you.
-If you have club kit, please try to remember to wear it, if possible.
-The code of conduct for club rides can be found in the gallery and I
urge everyone to have a look:
http://www.covtri.co.uk/index.php?action=mgallery;sa=media;id=311;dl

In particular, please note the following:

* This is a GROUP ride, so we ride as a group.  Even though there is a
ride leader, it is everyone’s responsibility in the group to watch
out for other members and make sure no one is left behind for any reason
without clear agreement within the group.

* If you want to do the club ride, but are uncertain as to which route you should do, then please do not hesitate to contact the Club Ride Coordinator, Matt, or one of the other coaches. If you haven't done a club ride before then please pick the slowest route and see how you get on. If in doubt go for the shorter, slower route so that you and everyone else enjoys the ride!

There are three routes planned for this month:

26.8 miles, led by Fiona (This will be at the pace of the slowest rider)
http://www.bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=236724

30.6 miles, led by Pete (This will be 14 - 15 mph average - you MUST be able to sustain this average speed for about two hours.)
http://www.bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=236713

36.1 miles, led by Ed (This will be at 16 - 17 mph average - you MUST be able to susatain this average speed for about two hours.)

Don't forget the next club ride is Sunday 10th July, 9.30am.  NOT 3rd July

-Start/Finish location: This month, we will be returning to the Village Hotel as the starting point for the ride
-The code of conduct for club rides can be found in the gallery and I
urge everyone to have a look:
http://www.covtri.co.uk/index.php?action=mgallery;sa=media;id=311;dl

In particular, please note the following:

There are currently two routes finalised, dependent on finding ride leaders, and there may be potential for a third route also.  Precise details of ride leaders will, unfortunately have to wait until after IM Austria.

Short loop 24.7 miles (at the pace of the slowest rider)
http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=212085

Long loop 32.9 miles (This will be at 16 - 17 mph average - you MUST be able to susatain this average speed for about two hours.)

Hope to see lots of you there,

Kind regards,

A quick reminder that the next club ride is this Sunday 7th August, 9.30am.

-Start/Finish location: This month will once again be at the Village Hotel as the starting point for the ride
-The code of conduct for club rides can be found in the gallery and I
urge everyone to have a look:
http://www.covtri.co.uk/index.php?action=mgallery;sa=media;id=311;dl

In particular, please note the following:

without clear agreement within the group.

Unfortunately due to the holiday and race seasons we are little bit short on ride leaders this month. Penny will be leading a ride of about 45 miles around North Warwickshire, however this will include a tea stop at Kingsbury! The pace will be at the speed of those who are there, but something in the region of 13 - 15 mph. If faster people would like to do the ride, then there is the possibility of going on ahead and meeting up with the main group at Kingsbury.

Hope lots of you can make it.

Kind regards,

Matt

Does anyone have any comments, suggestions an feedback about the club rides?

Let us know what sort of things you want? Longer, shorter, faster, further, with a tea stop? More regular....etc.

I really enjoy the group rides and would be very happy to go bi-weekly, but monthly doesn't feel too bad. A few personal preferences and suggestions in no particular order:
*Earlier start would be good, at least when daylight hours allow. Personally I'd like 6.30 am or so but that's not everyone's cup of tea Grin 8-8.30 might be a bit more tolerable. Quite happy to finish at the same time so a longer total ride.
*Possibly linked with early starts, a longer ride (50?) option not necessarily at speed would be good. Could do staggered starts but that probably is getting a bit complex to administer.
*I'd rather not stop for food / drinks personally - finishing at a cafe is great for refreshment but stopping midway seems to miss the point.
*We have had some issues with groups breaking up, which kind of misses the point of a group ride. That seems to me to be a function of quite large groups of people wanting to / able to ride at different speeds. Easy way of dealing with this is sticking to the slow / medium / fast groupings but that does require critical mass of numbers. Hopefully this asking people what they want out of the rides might improve attendance and allow different groups of a decent size each. We could go the route of a co-leader bringing up the rear but I think (hope) we're all grown up enough to not need that. Or just have the ride leader Taser the outriders Wink

Thanks for asking!

not have a tea stop half way round? Are you mad?  Grin  This is what makes a good ride!!!!   Cheesy

Its a good point and I think we will find that most of our members (and most triathletes) do not want a cafe stop half way round. For most cycling clubs this is the format they use - 30miles to a cafe and 30miles or so back.

I think the reason we had a 9.30am start was so that those of us leading the rides could still do some of our own training before hand. But perhaps now we have a pool of ride leaders bigger than just Ed or I, and now that we're getting a good group of people out on the rides we can look at this.

Anyway thanks for your feedback Bruce all good points. Lets see what anyone else says.
